   HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

What first comes to mind when you think of this holiday? Maybe it is the colors red, white and blue...stars and stripes...fireworks...parades...cookouts with hamburgers and hot dogs...freedom! For some, it is an opportunity for family gatherings, a celebration of our freedom, and for many of us, a chance to enjoy a day off from work to relax and benefit from the summer weather. For others, it provides an opportunity to reflect on our national heritage, and the steps that were taken so that we may live in a country ruled by democracy, and one that offers us religious freedom. We are fortunate to be able to attend any number of churches or various denominations, offering a diverse range of worship styles to meet our needs. We can choose freely the manner and method of worship which is most-effective to our personal growth as Christians. Sadly, for much of the world, this is not the case.

So, on the day when we gather for a day of fun and celebration, remember that as Christians, we celebrate more than just national and religious freedom. As we look into the skies at the amazing fireworks displays meant to remind us of our patriotic freedom, let us not forget to also look into the skies and the heavens beyond, and be reminded of the freedom from sin and death that was given to us by the Grace of God. We are truly blessed in so many ways!

Have a wonderful and safe Holiday!

Krista

A SPECIAL WORD TO OUR SR. HIGH YOUTH

Explore God's Call on the Web:

A new Web site, www.ExploreCalling.org, helps young people discern how God is calling them to serve the United Methodist Church as clergy or lay people.

Whether you're in 7th grade, 10th grade or a high school senior, it's never too early to think about how God may be calling you to live out your faith. God invites us to live our faith in ways that will serve God and others. You may be thinking about what your life would be like if you were ordained - and the things you can do as an ordained deacon or elder. You may be wondering how your faith makes a difference when you think about becoming a teacher, a doctor, an accountant, an engineer, a graphic designer or a reporter - or whatever else you may want to pursue!

Figuring out what God wants you to do usually doesn't happen overnight. It takes time, faith, and sometimes a lot of patience. But there are things you can do that will help you along the way. Take time to pray, to learn, to serve, and to explore. Listen for God's voice, talk to other people that you trust and try on new ways of serving. All these things can help you learn more about how God is calling you to live.

Whatever you do with your life, you can serve God - that's part of what vocation is all about.
